Bringing your dog, cat, or ferret from Canada to Great Britain? You don’t need an EU pet passport — that document doesn’t apply here. Canada-origin pets need exactly one document: the Great Britain pet health certificate, issued by your Canadian vet. Because Canada is a “listed” country, your pet won’t need a rabies blood test, but it will need a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 15 weeks before travel, and (for dogs) a tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours before arrival. Here’s the complete, current checklist.
Which Travel Document Do You Actually Need?
This is the single most important thing to get right: an EU pet passport cannot be used to bring a pet from Canada into Great Britain. GOV.UK’s own document checker lists exactly one accepted document for a pet coming from Canada — the Great Britain pet health certificate, issued by an official veterinarian in Canada. A pet that arrives without meeting the rules can face up to 4 months in rabies quarantine, be returned to Canada, or in the worst case be euthanised — so this isn’t a detail worth guessing on.
The good news: Canada is on the UK’s “listed countries” table, so unlike pets from unlisted countries, yours does not need a rabies antibody (blood/titer) test — the health certificate alone covers it.
Coming change: the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 2 December 2025 but is not yet in force as of this writing — the government still needs to set a commencement date. Once active, it will bar the import of dogs and cats under 6 months old, animals more than 42 days pregnant, and animals with certain mutilations (like illegally cropped ears or docked tails). We’ll update this guide when a commencement date is confirmed.
Great Britain Pet Health Certificate Requirements
Microchip
Your pet must be microchipped before, or at the same time as, its rabies vaccination. If the chip is implanted after the vaccination, the vaccination doesn’t count and must be repeated — the chip number has to be on record before or when the vaccine is given.
Rabies Vaccination
Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of its rabies vaccination, and the vaccination isn’t valid for travel until 21 full days have passed. In practice, that means your pet needs to be about 15 weeks old before it can travel to Great Britain from Canada — there’s no way to shortcut this timeline.
Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs)
Dogs must be treated against the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before arrival in Great Britain — the window is measured from your arrival time, not from when you leave Canada, and treating too early or too close to arrival both make the treatment non-compliant. Get the treatment documented on your pet’s health certificate.
Certificate Timing
Your pet’s health certificate must be issued by your vet, and your pet must enter Great Britain within 10 days of that certificate being issued. Plan your vet visit and travel dates around this 10-day window — leave it too long and the certificate expires before you travel.
Bringing More Than 5 Pets
Traveling with more than 5 pets normally triggers stricter commercial (“Balai”) import rules. There’s a narrow exception: if your pets are traveling to attend or train for a competition, show, or sporting event, all pets are over 6 months old, and you carry written proof of registration for that event with you when you travel (plus a completed declaration), the 5-pet limit doesn’t apply. Outside of that, keep it to 5 pets or fewer per non-commercial trip.
Approved Routes Into Great Britain
Pets can only enter Great Britain via an approved air, sea, or rail carrier and route. This list changes without much notice (it was last updated 7 August 2026), so confirm your specific airline and route are still on it before booking — don’t rely on a carrier name you’ve seen mentioned elsewhere, including here. There are currently no approved routes directly into Wales.
Guide and Assistance Dogs
Guide and assistance dogs still need to meet the standard requirements above (microchip, rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment, health certificate), but they often have more flexibility on entry points and routes. Keep your dog’s assistance/training documentation with your travel paperwork to help things go smoothly at the border.
Returning to Canada
Coming back to Canada with your pet has its own, separate requirements from CFIA — don’t assume the UK paperwork covers your return trip. Check our Canada Pet Passport Guide for the full checklist, and keep your pet’s vaccination records current and easy to access for a smooth re-entry.
Tips for a Smooth Move
- Start early: Begin planning several months in advance — the microchip-then-vaccinate-then-wait-21-days timeline alone takes time to get right.
- Work with a pet relocation service: An experienced international pet relocation service can help you avoid the timing mistakes that lead to quarantine or a refused entry.
- Organize your documentation: Gather your pet’s microchip proof, rabies vaccination record, tapeworm treatment record, and health certificate together well before your trip.
- Get your pet used to its crate: Acquire a suitable travel crate early and let your pet get comfortable in it before the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an EU pet passport to bring my pet from Canada to Great Britain?
No. GOV.UK lists exactly one accepted document for pets coming from Canada: the Great Britain pet health certificate, issued by a vet in Canada. An EU pet passport doesn’t apply to this route.
Does my dog need a rabies blood test to enter Great Britain from Canada?
No. Canada is a “listed” country under the UK’s pet travel rules, so your pet is exempt from the rabies antibody (blood/titer) test required from unlisted countries. The health certificate alone is enough.
How soon before travel does my pet need its health certificate?
Your pet must enter Great Britain within 10 days of the health certificate being issued by your vet — not the other way around. Time your vet visit accordingly.
What’s the minimum age for a puppy to travel to Great Britain from Canada?
About 15 weeks. Puppies must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of rabies vaccination, and the vaccination isn’t valid for travel until 21 full days have passed.
When does my dog need its tapeworm treatment?
No less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before you arrive in Great Britain. The window is based on your arrival time, not your departure from Canada.
Can I bring more than 5 pets with me?
Generally no, unless you’re traveling to a competition, show, or sporting event with all pets over 6 months old and written proof of your event registration. Otherwise, more than 5 pets triggers stricter commercial import rules.
Is there a change coming to UK pet import rules?
Yes. The Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Act 2025 received Royal Assent in December 2025 and, once it takes effect, will bar the import of dogs and cats under 6 months old, animals more than 42 days pregnant, and animals with certain mutilations. It isn’t in force yet as of this writing.
